Anthony Callisto, Jr. is the Director and Chief of Public Safety for Syracuse University where he manages over one-hundred full time campus peace officers, community service officers, communications officers and administrative staff. He was appointed in January of 2006 when he retired as the Chief Deputy for the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office where he worked for 25 years. His last ten years he served as Chief Deputy and managed a staff of nearly three-hundred eighty deputy sheriffs in his department’s jail facility, prisoner transportation and court security section as well as research and development and training sections. From 1992 through 1996, as a Lieutenant, Chief Callisto worked as the project manager for the construction and transition to a new generation, 654 bed, high rise Direct Supervision Jail Facility, the Onondaga County Justice Center. Callisto is an expert in criminal justice management and operation, community policing strategies, program development, incident investigation, prisoner transportation, court and building security, facility design and technology and new facility transition. Chief Callisto is certified by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services as a police and corrections instructor. Callisto has instructed in hundreds of hours of recruit academy training sessions, transition training classes, training for other sheriff’s and police departments in New York State and the American Jail Association and he is the chair of the training committee of the Central New York Association of Chief of Police. Callisto is a consultant for the United States Department of Justice National Institute of Corrections and the American Jail Association and for three years was a Contributing Editor for Corrections Manager’s Report. In addition to law enforcement experience, Callisto is a consultant and trainer for the Executive Education Program at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. His work in that program includes consulting and training for various state and federal agencies in the areas of Conflict Resolution, Interest Based Negotiation, Mediation, Communication Skills, Management and Leadership. Chief Callisto holds a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Columbia College and a Master of Arts in Public Administration at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. Callisto is an adjunct instructor for the Criminal Justice Program at Columbia College and Keuka College. Anthony Callisto, Jr. is active in his community, serving on boards for various civic and community organizations, and coaching youth sports.
