Malaysia consumes increasingly more energy as its economy grows quickly. Industry, transportation, commercial and residential buildings are the leading energy-consuming sectors. Precisely, Malaysia commercial and residential buildings contribute about a third to its entire energy consumption. As a result, building energy efficiency (BEE) has been attracting increasingly more interest from the Malaysian government and Malaysian people.
Between now and 2030, global primary energy consumption is expected to rise by 1.6% per annum or 45% in total in the next 20 years. In Malaysia, electricity demand is forecasted to reach 23,092 MW in 2030.
Project to contribute to energy efficiency has also been undertaken by many companies in Malaysia as we speak. For example, TENAGA Nasional Bhd’s (TNB) unit TNB Energy Services Sdn Bhd has inked smart energy efficiency (SEE) agreement with Institut Teknologi Petroleum Petronas (INSTEP), Kuala Terengganu that will save INSTEP about 407,880 kWh of energy per year.
There is a potential for improving the energy performance of buildings. This is true both for existing and new buildings. A few demonstration projects in Malaysia have shown aspects of this, example of such buildings are the Securities Commission Building, MEGTW’s new Low Energy Office (LEO) building in Putrajaya and PTM’s Green Energy Office (GEO) Building in Bangi.
Energy efficiency is centrally important to social development, economic growth and resilience, and clean energy transitions. Many countries have successfully implemented energy efficiency policies, resulting in a range of positive outcomes in terms of jobs, health, security, resilience and access.
